    Dear Mira,

We were teenagers and a number of us were sleeping over at a friends house. There was Bruce, whose house it was, Brett, Little Pete, your Dad (Big Pete) and I. I fell asleep before anyone else which was a very dangerous thing to do in that company. I even remember thinking that as I nodded off…

Well, Brett and Peter decided the height of hilarity would be to put a boom box beside my ear and blast me into conciousness. I awoke in a fury and decided the best way to deal with this was to challenge Brett and Little Pete to a fight in the park the next morning. Typical teenager…too much hormones, too little judgement and brains.

Well next day we did indeed meet in the park….Brett, Little Pete and I. Your Dad came along as an independent observer, although I was always sure he wanted to ensure they didn’t do permanent damage to me. Although Brett and Peter gave me the choice to back out of the fight, my pride wouldn’t let me.

The most memorable part of the fight was when they had gotten me to the ground with Brett holding my legs and Peter sitting on my chest saying, “I can hit you, I can hit you”. Well, I smucked Little Pete in the mouth cutting his lips on his braces. Before things escalated any further, your Dad pulled Brett and Little Pete off me and the encounter was over. He truly saved me from a good beating that day…:)

I have thought often of this during the past few decades and particularily of your Father and his sister, Suzanne. Of all the people I met in my life, your Dad has my greatest respect. Although we were mere boys, he had a mature, gentle soul which I both needed and appreciated at that particular point in my life. Coupled with his formidable intelligence, he was a pleasre to know.

As his daughter, I thought you may wish to know this.

    All the best,

‘An old friend of your Dads’

P.S. I purposely put a fictitious email address in so you won’t feel obligated to respond.
