Julie’s dad—who has been helping her cope with her grief—never even got to meet Jose. Emily Gan’s father comes from a small village in Malaysia where the cries of birds fill the air. Swiftlets are tiny birds whose nests are valued delicacies in Chinese cuisine. Having lived in Canada since the 1970s, Emily’s dad dreams of reconnecting with his roots and of providing a prosperous future for his three (now grown) daughters by building an Edible Bird Nest farm.
